Painting, drawing, sculpting and even photography contain within each category a variety of different methods and media that create different effects and different works of art. Art that is produced depends solely on the genre the artist is trying to cater to.

Water coloring and oil painting are popular ways art is created. Paint surfaces can have an extreme effect on the way a painting may turn out. Size and types of paint brushes can affect paint strokes and the total look on a painting.

There are many different types of media utilized in drawing. The many tools used for drawing including ink, pencil, pastels, charcoal, chalk and markers all create unique pieces of art. Drawing can be done on paper, canvas, cardboard, plastic and even leather.

Materials artist may use to sculpt on may be comprised of wood, stone, clay, ice sand and metal. Final products of sculptors are directly effected by the media. Wood is specifically sculpted through the subtraction of materials, or the carving away of material. When carving wood, marble or stone, it is important to use the process of subtraction.

Clay and ceramics have to be constantly tampered with in order to be molded in the preferred shape or form. Anything that requires sculpting, including clay modeling requires a lot of manipulation.

Adding pieces to complete a sculpture is known as addition. Metal sculptures use a variety of pieces to compose a significant piece of art. Sand is continuously added to sand sculptures to complete a piece of art.

Environmental sculptures utilize substitution to include a variety of materials in an art piece.

Color and Black and white photography is a popular concept. The same photograph taken in color or in black and white can appear very different, as black and white photography tends to show the light and its effect with more contrast than color photography does. Analog and digital media can create different effects, as film photography tends to give more grain to the photograph. Paper choice for a photo can significantly effect the final product.

The way a finished product may look depends on the category of media used. It is important to review the different types of visual graphic art media to find what is right for the artist. There are no rules to producing breathtaking art pieces using graphic media. Art is a wonderful field of work that can be taken in many directions.
